Less than 10 days to get relieved from AdventNet and to start working on my new venture.
OpManager OnDemand is almost ready for release. Initial testing and bug-fixing is complete and the team is now into upgrade testing in the local grid setup and if there are no unforeseen issues, there should be an upgrade happening in the IDC grid this weekend ; before I get relieved.
I have started getting questions from friends / colleagues on my proposed startup. I have put them here for the sake of those I did not bump into, in the past couple of weeks.
Decided on what to do (or) what problem to solve ?
The first one I am going to work on will be a SaaS based solution to manage residents welfare association.
Solutions for schools and for clinics will follow later.
Film production management software, may not be taken up in the near term.
Why association software ?
I know of the pain points in managing such an entity and felt that I can easily sell early versions of the software to local apartment associations in Velachery and surrounding suburbs. This is the region which had witnessed major growth during the previous real estate boom and which has a high density of IT professionals, so easy to target them.
Also the essential components and the experience gained in building this software will equip me in targeting other segments (schools and clinics) and by that time, “netbooks” (affordable net enabled notebook computers) would be available in the market from multiple players, at competitive rates, so as to enable adoption of SaaS based solutions.
Are there existing solutions addressing this market ?
When I first searched for existing solutions with the keywords “Apartments Association Software”, I was surprised to not find relevant, useful results. Then, after hopping through multiple keywords, found such software. The problem was with the keywords : I should have used the keyword sets “Condominium Association Software” or “Home Owners Association Software” or “HOA Software”.
Yardi seems to be the big guy with a much broader portfolio and revenue of over $50M, while there are several other medium/small players too; like Buildium, CondoConduit, AssociationVoice, CondoManager, Advantos and more.
Happy, because existing players validate the market and present themselves as targets to beat. This is far easier than a new market and an unclear feature set.
How are you planning to sell ?
My initial market is going to be Velachery (Chennai, India).
Here in Chennai, even with the out-sourcing/off-shoring opportunities, people still earn in Rupees. The benefit of the cost advantages mostly goes to the companies which undercut US rates, while still paying Indian salaries. Such companies usually have very weak presence in Indian market. So, to sell to Indian customers, I need to come up with some “real” Indian rates. My bicycle should come in handy, for my sales visits. Once I have my solution working fine for a decent number of associations, I would then target a bigger market.
Where are you going to have your office ?
I will be working from home, at least for a couple of months.
Are you going to employ someone ?
No, not at once. May be, a little later.
Platform, Language ?
Google AppEngine, Python.
Started coding ?
No, only from Oct 1, 2008.

then you will be pricing at X/45 (maybe this value will change tomorrow) in Indian prices.Even if we were paid with American salaries then also we won’t have the luxury living they do.
How you can expect a average indian Apartment association will buy a licensed s/w is this happening in India ?
Entrepreneurship is solving the others problems rather than ours
Anywayz all the best…

Kiran :
No. It is not X/45 (Which is the current conversion rate); It should be based on ratio of the average salary of the customer in India to the average salary of the customer in US, for the same job profile.
It works out to around 1/10 for a Programmer/Developer and around 1/5 for someone like a Project Manager. So the rates could be around X/7 to make it affordable for the Indian customer. To the US customer one can charge the same, if there were no additional costs. But to enable sales and to support the customers in that timezone, to travel to US for business reasons or to set up an office there or for marketing in the US media, one will have to spend more, in dollars. So for US, the rates should be above X/7, but can still be well below X. My guess is it could be between X/2 and X/5.
Differential pricing is required to enable people to buy licensed software. Flat rate pricing, while maintaining differential salaries will only lead to piracy, as is rampant in India, China and other developing countries.

Kiran : “Even if we were paid with American salaries then also we won’t have the luxury living they do.”
Define “luxury living” ? // Hint : Each one has a different interpretation.
Why do you think you need to spend it off on such a “luxury living” ?
Why not just save and retire sooner ?!
Why not buy some property in America, invest in some business and settle down there and have whatever “luxury living” they have ?
Who decides your definition of “luxury living” ?!
That reason makes me laugh whenever someone says it to me. Did you not laugh the first time you were told that ?! It could be even more funny, if it comes from people who hold back the cash, quoting that reason.

Thanks Venkat.
Ideas don’t matter – execution does. And, not every one is OK with an income of around Rs.15K/month (which is as low as I can get) and I need to achieve this within a year.
And yes, each one of you at AdventNet can sure help me.

Film Production management , MTC Transport (Driver/Conductor alltoment etc ) Management are the few recommendations. ( ‘ll execute and compete you in future!!.)
I am damn sure that Film Production Management is hot in the market and a money making industry… Jus give a thought on it.
Management Software on ‘Residents Association’ will get you market in US than in India.

RRaj,
first of all my big CONGRATS and wishes to you for making this bold move. Not many of them will be willing to work alone on a new product on a completely new segment after being in a company for so long. A brave move indeed and my heartiest congratulations and wishes for you to succeed at the highest level. The topic seems interesting indeed. Willing to help you in some form or the other (Atleast to help you finding one customer).

Target commercial buildings managed by one of the corporate tenant (eg.Kaashyap). Similar maintenance like residential apartments but at frequent intervals reqd for such commercial buildings. Decision cycle would be much lesser in comparison and affordability increases by multifold

Raj:
Nice idea and my best wishes for the execution.
I love the way you have put your analyis – and would like to see more updates on your startup.
To target the associations in normal apartments, have a smooth Offline-to-SAAS integration, because still many of us connect to the Internet only after 11 p.m. I think you would have already thought about a solution for this.

Raj,
The idea is very good.
Who are the users of your software? RWA-office workers or the residents or both. I guess the answer is “both”.
But do you think all the associations have computer in their offices? Not sure even if 50% of the associations have it. Did you try to do some sort of survey on these lines?
Thanks,
Rajan
March 31, 2009 at 7:11 am |
Thanks for dropping by, Rajan.
Yes, ResidentialCommunity.in is for “both”.
I know of apartment associations in Velachery formed post 2004 and with owners predominantly in the IT field, having dedicated staff with an office and a PC. Currently desktop computing tools like Excel are used by such staff. http://www.ResidentialCommunity.in aims to move things online and enable collaboration within owners.
